In Abyss, your success is measured by two things: how long you can stay down and how big of a catch you can bring back. Mastering the balance between these two things will ensure your success.
Follow this technical path to avoid wasting in-game cash on sub-optimal gear.
General rule of thumb:
Buy Harpoons if you want better fish.
Buy Tubes if you want more fish.
Phase 1: The Early Game
Don't rush into the deep end immediately. Efficiency in the first 20 minutes sets the pace for the rest of your run.
Follow the Tutorial: It’s fast and provides the essential foundation.
The Kraken Quest: Complete this first! Do not attempt to move on to the Ancient Sands until you’ve satisfied the Kraken.
Gear Priorities:
Buy: The Puffer Tube (excellent early-game value).
Skip: The Air Rifle Harpoon and the Fire Tube. These are trap investments that slow down your real progression.
Phase 2: Ancient Sands
Once you arrive at the Sands, the game's economy scales up. This is where most players make the mistake of buying "side-grade" gear instead of focusing on the essentials.
The "Sands" Shopping List:
Boat Tube ($5,250): A top priority. This provides the oxygen jump needed for deeper exploration.
Crossbow Gun ($4,750): Crucial for catching the more valuable fish in this biome.
Wasted Gun ($17,500): It is one of the most cost-effective power spikes in the game.
Pro Tip: You can safely skip the Rukiry Tube (found near Grumpy Hank at the castle). It isn't necessary if you've already got the Boat Tube.
Phase 3: The Spirit Roots Transition
Reaching the Spirit Roots requires some grinding and questing.
The Zipline Tube (Recommended)
Cost: $18,500
Requirement: 10 Diver Quests completed.
The Verdict: While it’s slower than the Boat Tube, it gives access to the Spirit Roots biome.
Phase 4: Late Game Mastery
Once you’ve gained access to Spirit Roots, head directly to the Lumi NPC inside the oxygen area to find your endgame equipment.
Magroot Harpoon: Essential for high-level damage and securing the rarest fish types.
Oxytube: The current gold standard for dive time.
